So, prior to putting XP on my laptop, I was running Ubuntu and rolled my own backup solution. It was really simplistic: write a bash script that used rsync to backup certain directories to a remote server (the server running this website).
I was planning to get a similar setup running again with the help of Cygwin but yesterday I heard about Dropbox from Lifehacker and Joel On Software.
Dropbox is pretty slick. I’m using it mainly to allow me to keep my school documents current across multiple computers, i.e. take notes during class and when I use my desktop at home, there they are. Magic!
What is especially slick to me is that while Dropbox is running, it does an update of the changed files as they change. I noticed this during class taking notes. Every time I saved the text document, Dropbox would update immediately. Pretty cool.

I loved the demo video on the Dropbox site, when he sent the the link over aim and the person replied “why do you keep sending me this crap”
Ha, I haven’t watched that video yet. Now I have a reason to.
