My Backup Script

Despite being very simplistic, I want to share my backup script. This will only work for you if you are running on a machine with rsync on it, which is most Linux, Unix machines.

Here is the code:

echo "Syncing ~/docs"
rsync -ave ssh local/folder user@:host:remote/folder

This is pretty much the entirety. I just choose a few different folders by listing those two lines a couple of times. I am sure there is a better way to do this, but it’s working for me.

I think it is a really good idea to have a backup plan figured out, because you never know when a hard drive is going to fail.

List of software development/engineering books?

Today, I was a given a copy of Code Complete 2nd Edition at work. I ended up talking to a coworker about must-have books for professional software developers/engineers. So my question is, what books in your collection do you consider must-haves?

I have meant to write up a list a few times in the past but never end up writing it down. Here are a few books that I have seen called must-haves:

  • Code Complete
  • Mythical Man-Month
  • Pragmatic Programmer
  • Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs
  • Knuth’s books

What books should I add or take away?

Looking back at 2007

2007 was a pretty big year for me, as I hit several big personal milestones.

In March, Tanya and I celebrated our one year anniversary. That was pretty cool and pretty quickly we will celebrate two years together. What I find interesting is that March 2009 will our 3rd year together, but probably won’t be celebrated. Instead August will be our anniversary month.

Also in March, I accepted an internship with Maverick Software Consulting to do some work for Thomson. I am at the tail end of my second project and I am excited about the next. I am glad for all the experience and connections this internship has give me. I also continue to do some work for Flock. The fall semester didn’t leave much free time (except for Sunday’s but I filled that with several hours of football), but coming this spring I hope to find some time to help out with support.

In June, Tanya and I got engaged. That was a pretty fun time, but we didn’t waste any time getting the planning started. Not once have I regretted this decision and am looking forward to getting hitched.

A lot of fun times were had with many friends. A couple stand out in my mind. A few weeks ago, Tanya, the housemates and I threw a Christmas party at my house. It turned out great and I think a lot of fun was had. Thanks to everyone who come, I hope you all had fun. We also had a few fires (in the firepit) at my place. They were always a good time and when the weather is nice again we’ll do it again. Oh, and the Halo 3 parties were always fun. It was a blast having 12 people playing in the same house. It reminded me of the LAN parties I went to in high school.

Thanks to all my friends and family for some great memories this year. I am looking forward to 2008, especially to getting married, attending friend’s weddings and seeing a bunch of friends graduating.

Research Net Neutrality. I don’t know nearly enough about what’s going on there.

ACM Presentation

I, along with 2 friends, gave an ACM presentation on Ubuntu today. I think it went over pretty well. The presentation might have been a little too short, but was too long when they gave a similar presentation last semester. We had a few good conversations after the presentation, so it was a success in my book.

We had two professors attend, which was pretty cool. Hopefully in the future, there will be some more technical Linux presentations. I am thinking about doing a presentation on getting involved in open-source software. I think that would be pretty sweet.

I have a question for my two readers: We used Google Docs to create the presentation. Not Powerpoint or OpenOffice’s powerpoint app. Does anyone know of a way to get the .ppt from Google Docs? I really hope this is possible. If not, I will probably never use Google’s online stuff again.
